What Happens To Your Pets If You Outlive Them?

April 9, 2013 by Morris Hall, PLLC 5 Comments

For a lot of pet owners, their pets are considered part of the family. So, who will take care of the pets if they outlive their owners? If plans are not made before time, many of these animals either end up in unknown homes or are euthanized. One way to provide for your pets is making a provision for their care in your Will or Living Trust.  In these estate planning documents you can designate the person you would like to care for your pet.  When done through a Living Trust, you can also ensure all your pets needs are taken care of by providing a certain amount of money per pet for their upkeep.

What happens if the person designated is unable or unwilling to care for the pet? One alternative in the Tucson area  is the Humane Society of Southern Arizona’s Guardian Angel Pet Protection Program. This program is a no-kill shelter that will take care of your pet.  Most areas have no-kill shelters that will take in pets and ensure they are cared for. A standard gift amount of $15,000 will generally ensure the medical expenses of your pet is taken care of throughout their life. These program will select a new home, through your criteria, and in certain cases, can even monitor your pet throughout their lifetime to ensure quality care.

Our companion animals add so much to our lives, giving us joy, loyalty and unconditional love. You can allow for the care and protection of your pets through proper estate planning with Morris Hall.

Call 888.222.1328 today to schedule a free consultation and discover how to best protect your assets, loved ones and furry friends.
