Before being known as the creator of Star Trek, Gene Roddenberry was known by many other titles. Over his years, he had been a policeman, a aeronautical engineer, a licensed pilot for Pan American, a member of the U.S. Army Air Corps and a published author. However, when he saw a television for the first time, he knew that was where his future would lie.
In 1966, Roddenberry began creating and producing Star Trek in Hollywood. While the first two pilots were rejected by the network for being “too cerebral,” once on the air, the show created an instant loyal following that is still strong today. To date, Star Trek has grown into 7 television series and 10 movies with yet another one in production. It has become perhaps the most successful television endeavor of all time, still loved and followed by millions of “trekkies” even 46 years after its inception.
Roddenberry passed away 1991 and had a fairly unusual stipulation in his Will. The great fantasizer of all things “outer space” wished to “go where no man has gone before” by having a portion of his cremated ashes shipped into space. Mrs. Majel Barrett Roddenberry, Gene’s wife, followed his wishes by having a capsule of his cremains launched into space in 1997 by Celestis, Inc, a company that specializes in “memorial spaceflights.”
Arrangements were also made so that when Mrs. Roddenberry passed away in 2008, both of their cremated remains, along with digitized tributes from fans, would be launched even deeper into space. In fact, the rocket-launched spacecraft which carried the capsules was sent deep into space, never to return to earth.
