Life is unpredictable! We plan for a certain set of occurrences, making sure that we and the people we care about, the people around us are in the best position for a positive outcome. But inevitably, something happens, and we are faced with a situation that may be new and foreign.
This morning I had a flight that I had to catch at 6:30. I had arranged a ride to pick me up from the airport, so I can get to my first meeting with some time to spare (so I can settle in, and prepare for the inevitable questions). Due to the early nature of the flight, my wife asked that I not disturb her in the morning, so I set myself up in the spare room – I laid out my clothes, got my toothbrush and had my shampoo. I set the alarm, and drifted off to sleep.
When I awoke in the morning, it was to silence and it was already 6:15! My inquisitive four-year old had adjusted the volume on the clock to silent! I missed my flight, my ride’s schedule had to be adjusted and the meeting will be delayed.
This domino affect, changing not only my life, but that of many others, was due because life is unpredictable – who would have thought that the alarm would not sound!
This situation is an inconvenience, but as an estate planning attorney this unpredictability can play havoc on my clients’ and their loved ones life! So we plan. And we plan with build in flexibility.
Though we cannot eliminate life’s unpredictability, we can mitigate its affects with a properly drafted estate plan. A plan that will work for you regardless of what life has in store.
But it all starts with putting that plan in place. And to do that, you will need to sit down with one of our estate planning attorneys to reduce the unpredictability in your life.
