Sunday, August 19th saw the death of one of Hollywood’s great directors, Tony Scott. Scott has directed a large number of popular films over his career, including such titles as Top Gun, True Romance, Déjà Vu, Unstoppable, and Enemy of the State. He and fellow director and brother, Ridley Scott, had also built their own production company called Scott Free Productions which produced a number of films as well as current television shows.
On the afternoon of the 19th, Tony Scott scaled the fence on the Vincent Thomas Bridge in Los Angeles, throwing himself over the edge to a 185 foot drop. His body was recovered from the water a few hours later. This past Monday, an autopsy was performed but pending toxicology reports can take a number of weeks to be completed, and an official verdict can not be reached until all possible contributors are ruled out.
Police stated that they believe it was indeed a suicide, but will continue to look into other possibilities, despite having found a suicide note and various letters of instruction written by Scott. ABC erroneously reported that Scott had previously been diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer. Scott’s wife was quick to refute the rumor, and the autopsy found no significant existing conditions.
A private funeral is scheduled for family and close friends of the director for this weekend. Scott is survived by his wife Donna, and their pre-teen twin boys, Frank and Max.
