Monday, August 6th, 2012 brought the death of one of the greatest musicians of our time, Marvin Hamlisch. At the age of 68, Hamlisch passed away unexpectedly in Los Angeles after a brief illness. This Tuesday, friends and family of the noted musician gathered together at his funeral, which was held at the Congregation Emanu-El, a prominent Manhattan synagogue. This same synagogue also held the funeral for legendary songwriter George Gershwin in 1937.
Hamlisch’s funeral was attended by a number of notable figures such as the former President Bill Clinton, Sony Corp. chairman Howard Stringer, Liza Minnelli, Diane Sawyer, Kathie Lee Gifford, Idina Menzel and many more. In total, over 2,000 attended the funeral to pay their respects and honor the memory of this musical icon.
Hamlisch composed, conducted and arranged music from Hollywood to Broadway and the Symphony. He composed over 40 film scores, including “Ordinary People,” “The Sting,” and “The Informant!. His best known scores on Broadway include “The Chorus Line,” for which he won a Pulitzer, “Sweet Smell of Success” and “The Goodbye Girl” which was later turned into a film starring Richard Dreyfuss.
Hamlisch is one of only 11 people who have won the rare EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards). Overall, he has won three Academy Awards, four Emmys, a Tony and three Golden Globes. When he died, he was in the midst of working on a new musical, “Gotta Dance” and a score for a new film directed by Steven Doserbergh and starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon.
Hamlisch’s memory and legacy will live on forever in his musical works. He said it best himself when he stated, “Music is truly an international language and it has the ability to bring people together like nothing else.”
