One in Five Patients with Parkinson's are Diagnosed Inaccurately.
The basic principles for identifying Parkinson’s disease have not changed in the two centuries since Dr. James Parkinson wrote “An Essay on the Shaking Palsy.” Diagnosis continues to center on four cardinal points – tremors, stiffness, slowness, postural instability – These do not always accurately identify the disease!
As a result, one in five Parkinson’s diagnoses by a movement specialist turn out to be inaccurate; the percentage is much higher among primary-care doctors. A patient can wait months or years to get a definitive answer. That takes a toll. That's just the beginning of the challenges doctors and patients face. Doctors cannot confidently predict how the disease will progress in any individual, as each patient is different.
Measuring all three at the same time should uncover the correlations and lead to better diagnoses, measurement of the disease’s progress, understanding of why someone is responding to treatment and, ultimately, the key to a cure.
Dr. Ryan Walsh, the MD/PhD who is leading Barrow’s efforts, theorizes that combining three types of MRIs will open the secrets of the disease.
West Hunsaker will discuss what documents can be done in advance and why it's important for you and your loved ones.
