World-renowned author, organizational guru, leadership specialist and BYU college professor Stephen R. Covey passed away on Monday, July 16, 2012. Covey was on a family get together in Montana when his health began to decline and he was rushed to the nearest hospital in Idaho Falls. Covey’s death is attributed to residual effects of a bicycling accident that occurred in April. He was surrounded by all of his nine children, their spouses and his beloved wife as he passed away.
Covey received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Utah, his master’s in business administration from Harvard and then a doctorate from Brigham Young University. Covey also is said to have received 10 honorary doctorate degrees.
Covey is best known as the author of the best-selling book, “7 Habits of Highly Effective People.” The book was so successful that Covey wrote additional books to highlight other areas where the 7 habits could be applied, as well as publishing a book on the “8th Habit” a number of years later. The Covey Leadership Center merged with Fanklin Quest in 1997 to create the FranklinCovey Co which provides global consulting, leadership training, improved business practices, and effectiveness and execution improvement. They are also well known for their organizational systems which can be purchased at most retailers where office products are sold.
Covey has received numerous honors and been titled one of the most influential people by Time Magazine. We are sad to hear of his passing and we send our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to his loved ones in their time of loss. Knowing how driven and organized Covey was, it seems most likely that his estate planning was in order and his family will have peace of mind knowing that those matters are taken care of. It truly is a relief in a time of sorrow.
Rest in peace Stephen Covey, we thank you for the lives you have changed and the influence for good you have had upon our world.
