Last weekend we lost a fashion icon, Oscar de la Renta. Mr. de la Renta was born on July 22, 1932 in the Dominican Republic. At the age of 18 years old, he moved to Spain to study painting at the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid. In the end, he really ended up studying life during this time by hanging out in the cafes and nightclubs, which is where his passion for fashion blossomed. He would earn extra cash to pay for his expensive wardrobe by sketching clothing designs, which eventually lead to a job with Cristobal Balenciaga.
After working with Cristobal Balenciaga’s salon, he moved to Paris, the holy place for the fashion world and worked as Antonio del Castillo’s assistant for several years. He would eventually move to New York City where he worked at Elizabeth Arden and Seventh Avenue and eventually started the Oscar de la Renta brand in 1965. He dressed almost everyone in Hollywood and his creations were a staple at all the red carpet events. Dressing Hollywood was not his only outlet. He also dressed several first ladies from Nancy Reagan to most notable Hillary Clinton. He was friends with the elite of the elite from the Kissingers to the Clintons.
Mr. de la Renta lives behind his second wife, Annette Engelhard Reed; his son, Moises de la Renta; three step-children, and nine step-grandchildren. Although, I was not involved with Mr. de la Renta’s estate planning, I can assume based on his personality that he had a good plan in place to provide for his wife and son.
