Mesa Attorney Sees Clearly Once More

April 10, 2012 by Morris Hall, PLLC Leave a Comment

I recently had a cataract removed from my left eye. I’m waiting for the removal of the cataract on my right eye. I can’t wait. I had forgotten what white looks like. When I look at a white paper with my left eye, it is white; when I look at the same paper with my right eye, the paper is tan – and not a light tan. It is surprising how the slow growth of a cataract can deprive us of clear sight by such slight degrees that we don’t perceive it until it is a significant issue. It is even more surprising that we think that what we are seeing through clouded lenses is accurate.

There are strong parallels to the status of our financial and legal affairs. We create planning documents and procedures for protection and benefit. As our circumstances slightly change, as we gently age, as there are small changes in the laws or nuances in the interpretation or application of the laws, our needs change. However, thinking that we have covered everything, we assume, with not the clearest view, that the efficacy of our plan is as bright as it was when we created it.

I really appreciate a good doctor’s advice about how to correct my vision. In a very real sense, I see the world differently now. I also appreciate the opportunity to keep our clients advised about the changes, sometimes even apparently slight, that affect their financial and estate plans. My great desire is that each client clearly understand his or her plan and know what can be done to improve it as laws and circumstances change. Clients have invested much thought and effort to provide for themselves and their successors, and we want to help them assure the continued effective application of their plans. As we often say at MH, estate planning is not just our practice – it is our privilege; it is our passion.
