I recently attended a networking luncheon with an esteemed friend who has served as a mentor to me. He, too, practices estate planning. After chit-chatting for awhile about our practices, he turned to me and said, “We have the best jobs around — we get to work with such great clients everyday!” I could not agree more!
As I pored over books in law school, I kept having to remind myself that the practice of law truly revolves around people. While the end goal of law school was to graduate and pass the bar exam, I knew I would one day help people solve their problems. It was a dream come true on that day when I first met with clients. And it has been a daily privilege ever since.
For example, I had the privilege of meeting with Joy (not her real name), a recently widowed young mother who was trying to pick up all the pieces after the unexpected death of her husband. Our firm helped create a plan giving her peace of mind to know that if something happens to her, guardians are in place for her children and trusts will provide for her children as they grow.
I’ve also had the privilege of meeting with an Roger (also not his real name), an entrepreneur looking to expand his current business. Our firm helped to create an asset protection plan to allow him to grow his business without worrying about potential creditors of his business taking his personal assets.
Most recently I had the privilege of meeting with Bill and Doris (no kidding—not their real names), the world’s proudest grandparents, and hearing story after story of their most adorable, intelligent and perfect grandchildren! We helped them create an estate plan leaving assets to these perfect little angels over the course of their lives—of course with stipulations as to how and when the funds can be accessed.
