Last week we lost a beloved comedian who knew how to make people laugh even during the darkest of times. She was born Joan Alexandra Molinsky on June 8, 1933. She later took the name Rivers after her agent told her that she couldn’t be known as Joan Molinsky. She died on September 4, 2014 after the doctors removed her from life support. Joan had gone into cardiac arrest a few days earlier during a routine surgical procedure. Just like all her funeral plans, Joan had made the proper provisions through a medical power of attorney to allow her daughter, Melissa Rivers, to make the important decisions, like taking Joan off of life support. We would have expected nothing less from such an amazing woman.
She was a true pioneer paving the way for female comedians. Her fiery personality landed her in the hot seat most of her career. But she never stopped because she loved to make people laugh. And she never apologized because she only said what everyone else thought. After reading all that has been said about her, I think Cindy Adams described her best, “she was brassy in public and classy in private.” From her stand-up comedy act, her QVC jewelry and to her show the Fashion Police on E!, she will surely be missed.
