Last Friday over 400 people attended the funeral of the well-loved comedian and actor, George Lindsey. Mr. Lindsey was best known for his role as Goober Pyle on “The Andy Griffith Show” and it’s successor “Mayberry RFD”, as well as his time on “Hee Haw”. He was 83 years old and had just suffered a brief illness when he passed away on Sunday, May 6th.
Mr. Lindsey spoke fondly of his past in show business and felt that the opportunity to make America laugh was his greatest contribution. Along with the above roles, Mr. Lindsey also played in “M*A*S*H”, “The Wonderful World of Disney,” “CHIPs,” “The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour,” “The Real McCoys,” “The Rifleman,” “The Alfred Hitchcock Hour,” “Twilight Zone” and “Love, American Style”. He also have film roles in “Cannonball Run II” and “Take This Job and Shove It,” and provided the voice in animated Disney films such as “The Aristocats,” “The Rescuers” and “Robin Hood.”
“America has grown up with me, “ he said in an interview in 1985. “Goober is every man; everyone finds something to like about ol’ Goober.” Mr. Lindsey and Andy Griffith remained good friends until his death and always considered their time on “The Andy Griffith Show” as the best time of their show business careers.
