I recently had the good fortune of meeting some very great people. Granted, in my role as an attorney at Morris Hall, I get to meet neat people all the time. These were different because they were all siblings, and they had just lost their mom. It was a blessing, in a way, because mom had been suffering for the last few years, and death finally brought the peace that mom deserved.
The “kids” (I use quotes because these folks are in their late-50s and early-60s) met with me to review the estate plan that mom had put in place, and to find out the next steps. Normally, these types of meetings can be pretty somber, but it was lighter than usual – they felt the peace that mom got. You could tell, right away, that the siblings all got along splendidly, but even if they didn’t, mom’s plan would have lessened that impact.
Mom had been a long time client, and had listened well – she had moved ALL of her assets into the trust. This made the conversation with the kids easier – We knew the plan mom put in place would work, and they would be able to execute on it!
What made these people “neat” was that all of them, to a one, told me that this experience – learning that mom had a good plan in place – made everything so much easier and that they would be giving me a call back in a couple of weeks to get their own plan in place.
It makes me feel really good when I know I made a difference in someone’s life. And in this case, the plan that we put together for mom helped the lives of four families!
When you do your estate plan, you aren’t only doing it for you, you are also doing it for your loved ones.

It also makes for a much more smooth and peaceful transition for the family if everything is well planned out.
If you really think about it, estate planning is meant for other people and not for yourself. It all comes down to how much do you love your family and what are you going to leave behind to give to them. I decided I would get my estate planning completed so that my family wouldn’t have to figure it all out when I am not here.
