Did you know that Cinco de Mayo is celebrated nationwide in the United States, but is only celebrated in minimal regions of? In fact, it is only celebrated primarily in the state of Puebla and is called The Day of the Battle of Puebla. In the United States, this day is a time to celebrate the heritage, culture and pride. The holiday also commemorates the American Civil Wars’ cause of freedom and democracy. Cinco de Mayo is often falsely believed to be Independence Day, which is actually celebrated on September 16.
As of 2006, there were over 150 official US celebrations of Cinco de Mayo, taking place across nearly half of the states. The celebrations are lively and colorful, combining both modern and historical elements of the culture, especially through music and dance.
Cinco de Mayo has been celebrated in California since the 1860s. However, it did not gain in popularity until the 1980s due in large part to marketers, such as liquor and food companies, deciding to capitalize on the celebratory nature of the day and therefore began to promote it.
