Ron Wilson; Locked Up to Help the AZ Humane Society

By | Charitable Giving, Other, Special Events | No Comments

AZ humane

You didn’t misread! This Saturday, July 19th, Ron Wilson will be locked in to a dog kennel at the Arizona Humane Society, in an effort to save the lives of thousands of homeless animals!

With a little help from his wife, Bonnie, and his two faithful dogs, Yankee and Sally they have put together some goodies to all the amazing folks who are helping Ron reach his goal for the Arizona Humane Society.

Bonnie has donated a delicious homemade, with love, Chocolate Texas Sheet Cake. Anyone who donates TODAY, Friday, July 18th between 10AM and 3PM will be placed in a drawing to win the cake! If you are unable to pick up your cake, have no fear! As long as you live in Maricopa County, Yankee and Sally (with a little help from Ron) will deliver the cake to you!!

There will also be a second cake, which will be given to the highest overall donor as a very special thank you!

Now, if you donated earlier this week or plan to donate on Saturday, don’t despair! Sally and, naturally, Yankee love baseball! So they have decided that each of you will be entered into a drawing for 2 tickets to an Arizona Diamondbacks game in September!

Of course, you can always give a second time to have the opportunity to win the cake!

Be A Scrooge

By | Holidays, Other, Special Events | No Comments

To say the least, the end of the year is busy.  Shopping, kids’ and grandkids’ school concerts, parties, dinners, greeting cards, newsletters, office gatherings, end-of-year accountings and other tax matters, decorating, and forever on.

Ever tempted to say, “Bah Humbug!”?

More importantly, are you driven to think and maybe even behave a bit like Ebenezer Scrooge, as portrayed in “A Christmas Carol”?

‘Tis the season to be jolly, and that’s true.  It can be difficult to juggle everything and everyone and maintain a cheerful disposition, but it is important to not let the trappings rob us of the joys and pleasures and delights of the special time.

Perhaps the most important caution for the season is about how we view and treat others.

Scrooge is a great study. Who was Scrooge?  How would you describe him?  I would wager that very few, if any, readers have an immediate positive thought.  Our focus, as for many around us, tends to the penurious, selfish, cold and lonely old man.

We forget that Scrooge had a marvelous change.  In spite of his earlier sorry life, the final, and lasting Scrooge was a person whom we should emulate.  These are the closing paragraphs of Dicken’s story:

Scrooge was better than his word.  He did it all, and infinitely more; and to Tiny Tim, who did not die, he was a second father.  He became as good a friend, as good a master, and as good a man, as the good old city knew, or any other good old city, town, or borough, in the good old world.  Some people laughed to see the alteration in him, but he let them laugh, and little heeded them; for he was wise enough to know that nothing ever happened on this globe, for good, at which some people did not have their fill of laughter in the outset; and knowing that such as these would be blind anyway, he thought it quite as well that they should wrinkle up their eyes in grins, as have the malady in less attractive forms.  His own heart laughed: and that was quite enough for him.

He had no further intercourse with Spirits, but lived upon the Total Abstinence Principle, ever afterwards; and it was always said of him, that he knew how to keep Christmas well, if any man alive possessed the knowledge.  May that be truly said of us, and all of us!  And so, as Tiny Tim observed, God Bless Us, Every One!

I wish for everyone a great holiday season, with deeper and more meaningful activities and relationships.  I wish for all of us to see the good and potential in others, and to all work together to make our homes, workplaces, neighborhoods, nation and world a better place. May God Bless Us, Every One!

Thank you to our Veterans

By | Other, Special Events, Veterans | No Comments

Today is Veterans Day.  Dan and I are veterans of the Vietnam era.  He was an Air Force navigator, and I was in the Navy JAG Corp.  While our experiences were very different, we are both proud to have served.  We are especially humbled to know many service members who have given a very significant portion of their lives, and even some, their very lives, to serve our nation.

Veterans day was first instituted as Armistice Day, remembering the armistice of World War I, which began on 11/11/18, at ll:00 a.m.  It was later expanded to honor the veterans of all wars.  I join with you in offering appreciation to all who have served in the armed services, and to those who still serve.

Veterans’ service is not only to our nation.  It is for peace, security and prosperity throughout the world.  It is on behalf of the most noted to the very humblest of all of God’s children.  Those who have served in harm’s way deserve our most reverent respect.

As I have lived around and associated with service members, I have become more appreciative of the great service their families render.  Military families get uprooted frequently.  As the service members are away on assignment, spouses double parenting efforts; children have to make great compensations for the absence of a parent; parents and siblings and boyfriends and girlfriends have greater cares and concerns, and their lives are significantly altered.

I am thrilled with acts of consideration and appreciation for service members that I witness at airports and other public places.  I am touched to hear prayers for the protection and well-being of faithful women and men who serve in dangerous and trying circumstances.  I join in my private contemplation and prayers, the supplication for the families who have lost the companionship of our troops for a time, or even permanently.

I wish there were an armistice from all military conflicts.  I wish there were an armistice from social and political conflicts.  I wish that the toils, sacrifices, blood and very lives of veterans would bring immediate peace,  understanding and unity to people everywhere.  I am unlikely to ever realize these wishes, but we can all make a greater effort to bring unity and peace into our daily encounters, which could eventually expand to regional, national and international progress.

Thank you, to all veterans, to veterans’ families and friends, and to all who seek the peace and security of all our fellow beings.

MH Attends AAEPA Event!

By | Estate Planning, Special Events | No Comments

Attorneys from our firm recently attended the semi-annual summit of the American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys.  The Academy is composed of 123 law firms throughout the United States who limit their practices primarily or exclusively to estate planning.

Extensive advanced training is offered to Academy attorneys twice a year for several days.  We have found the training to be essential to maintaining our knowledge of the law, to understanding and implementing important changes in the law and estate planning strategies, and to keep sharpening the saw.

Much of the content of the semi-annual summits concentrates on advanced estate planning and taxation matters.  In light of very important recent changes in state and federal laws, and the economic and governmental environment in general, it is very important to stay abreast in all areas of estate planning.

There are only two Arizona law firms that are authorized to hold membership in the American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys.  We feel extremely fortunate that MH is one of the firms.

As members of the Academy, we have access to documents that have been prepared and perfected over the years.  We have found the Academy documents and procedures, from creation of simple trusts, to health care directives, to complex estate and tax planning strategies, to helping clients create and pass their legacies, are unexcelled.

It gives our firm tremendous security and confidence to know that the services we provide.

The World’s Wealthiest Woman

By | Estate Planning, Special Events | No Comments

As a group, women still hold a small fraction of the world’s total 10-figure fortunes. Forbes lists 1,426 people as the World’s Billionaires.  Of this total, a mere 138 are women. However, that figure is an increase from 104 women last year.

The title of the world’s richest woman belongs to Liliane Bettencourt, the 90-year-old L’Oreal heiress. Forbes estimates Ms. Bettencourt’s fortune to be $30 billion, a $6 billion increase from last year.   A spike in the value of L’Oreal shares over the past year helped put her back among the top ten richest for the first time in over a decade. Ms. Bettencourt reportedly weighs in as the 9th wealthiest overall, up from the 15th wealthiest in 2012.

Ms. Bettencourt, whose father founded the cosmetics giant, was replaced on the L’Oreal board in February 2012 by her 25 year-old grandson.  Ms. Bettencourt is a widow with one daughter.  She also suffers from dementia, and in 2011, her fortune was put under the guardianship of her daughter after a very public three-year legal battle.

The Bettencourt family has waged numerous legal battles against one another. In a 2008 challenge, Ms. Bettencourt’s daughter petitioned courts to investigate a reported $1 billion in cash and gifts her mother allegedly gave to a friend.  Ms. Bettencourt’s daughter claimed, and Ms. Bettencourt vehemently denied, that the friend had taken advantage of her mother.  The Bettencourt fortune and surrounding circumstances are interesting; they also serve as a reminder that a mental health care power of attorney should be part of any comprehensive estate plan.
