Mickey Rooney has become an unintentional spokesman on behalf of the many individuals suffering from elder abuse. Rooney took his case to the courts to get himself removed from the care of his stepson, Christopher Aber, and his stepson’s wife. Rooney stated that the couple had abused him mentally, physically and financially. He stated that the couple withheld food and medication, prevented him from leaving his house and stole money from him to use for their own purposes. As a means to protect the actor, the court assigned attorney Michael Augustine as Rooney’s conservator.
The actor has been removed from the couples’ care but his attorney says they are liable for breach of fiduciary duty and fraud stemming from elder abuse, along with misappropriation of the actor’s name and likeness and are seeking a permanent injunction against the couple as additional protection for Rooney. Rooney states that the couple took advantage of his finances to enrich themselves. Since being removed from caring for Rooney, the Abers have filed for bankruptcy.
The probate court just recently approved the sale of Rooney’s home in Westlake Village which sold for just over $1 million. The actor was no longer able to use the stairs in the home and has since moved to a one-story residence. The profits from the sale were divided between Rooney and his wife, who do not live together but have not filed for a divorce or legal separation.
The 92-year-old actor is striving to get his life back and even hopes to resume his career in entertainment. Rooney was one of the most famous child stars of Hollywood and is best known during his role as Andy Hardy.
