The estate of Michael Jackson has seen no end of lawsuits and various financial battles ever since the death of the pop icon on June 25, 2009. Now another lawsuit has been brought against the singer’s estate, this one for a grand total of $1 billion.
Kimberly Griggs, a convicted criminal who spent years in prison for burglary and robbery, filed the case in San Diego claiming a right to a portion of the estate due to an intimate relationship she had with Jackson starting in 1979. Griggs claims that Jackson used her life experiences and details from their relationships throughout a number of his top-selling albums, including; “Off the Wall,” “Thriller,” “Bad,” “Dangerous,” and “Number Ones”.
Griggs stated that she was very upset that Jackson used elements of her life and their relationship, including personal secrets, in his songs. According to her, Jackson promised that he would give her the rights to the songs in order to appease her. Griggs states that she was shocked when she discovered that Jackson’s Will made no mention of her and that she was left completely out of his estate’s distributions.
Because Griggs did not receive the rights to the songs that she claims to have been promised, she is now suing the estate for $1 billion in damages. Griggs presented her claims in a handwritten lawsuit. While we do not have all of the details of the lawsuit, this case seems highly suspect and most likely little if anything will come of it. Jackson’s estate has yet to comment on the pending lawsuit.
